Those who are seeking registration information on an automobile can now inquire on-line. In August 2003, the City and County of Honolulu launched its on-line Hawaii Motor Vehicle Inquiry service with the help of DataHouse.

While this service is available to anyone with an Internet connection, the primary users are members of the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association (HADA). With this new on-line tool, auto dealers can quickly do a background check on a prospective trade-in, verifying, for example, that it has no pending transfers or liens or that it had not been stolen or permanently junked.

To access this and other kinds of information, users go to a login page and supply their automobile's VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and license number. The database provides information for vehicles registered within the state of Hawaii.

Technology

DataHouse worked in partnership with the City's Department of Information Technology to enable Internet access to its mainframe-based data. The Web site incorporates the use of:

  • Attachmate's mainframe host integration technologies
  • Microsoft's Active Server Pages (ASP)
  • XML, XSL and HTML

Designed with flexibility in mind, the system's data interface was written to work with both existing and planned future host integration software.

Benefits

Auto dealers now have access to the data and tools necessary to verify the status of a prospective trade-in. This has reduced the number of phone calls to the Department of Motor Vehicles and subsequent rejection processing associated with problem trade-ins.
