A case is filed in one of Hawaii's state courts once every minute. Judges preside over a wide variety of cases including divorces, child abuse cases, landlord-tenant disputes, traffic violations and assaults. Their decisions affect everyday life.

With such a reach, the Hawaii State Judiciary aims to consistently provide quality services for Hawaii citizens, and technology is an effective means to accomplish this. The Judiciary chose DataHouse to help carry out its Web site initiative.

Getting the Right Information To Users Efficiently

Just as the courts serve many kinds of needs, so must its Web site. Visitors have a variety of reasons to reach the Judiciary Web site, from getting court forms to finding out what to expect during a trial. The Web site not only serves the public at large, but researchers, attorneys and judges. With such a varied user base, the Judiciary needed to present its Web site information in a way that serves all groups quickly and effectively.

Hawaii State Judiciary Web Site
The Web site's new portal format gives visitors quick access to useful information.

But beyond effective presentation, the Web site needed to accommodate change and growth. Not all departments within the Judiciary have information on-line, but plans are in the works to expand the Web site as new services are made available. DataHouse's solution meets these requirements.

Features

DataHouse's portal system not only presents information in easy-to-follow categories and subtopics, but it also employs a navigation and template system that allows Web site owners to create or remove sections without disrupting the integrity of the Web site structure. Some of DataHouse's work includes:

  • Visual Redesign - DataHouse graphic designers recast the Judiciary Web site with graphics that reflect Hawaiian themes while projecting a professional and innovative presence.
  • Content Redesign - Based on user testing, DataHouse created new categories that are topic-related or need-driven. The Web site's portal structure aims to effectively serve a varied user base. Prior to the revamp, the Judiciary Web site contained long pages that required users to scroll for important information. DataHouse employed several Web content strategies, which include "chunking," lists, power boxes and hyperlinks. "Breadcrumbs" serve as navigation tools to help users know where they are within the Web site.
  • Automated Lists - To promote easy document management, DataHouse created templates and automated lists. In some cases, such as press releases, indexed lists are updated and archived automatically, after a content developer publishes an article.
  • Expandable Templates - There is no set limit for breadcrumbs, sections and subsections. Expandable templates give content managers flexibility if they decide to create, modify or remove sections.

The newly designed Web site becomes a powerful information source for a broad base of users while providing greater flexibility to content managers.

Technology

The new Web site was developed with InterLoom™, an e-business development solution. The Web site is hosted by Nettricity®, which offers its clients comprehensive Web site tracking and reporting capabilities.
